Notes for 7th Grade, 7.1.2011
Today we reviewed school subjects and went over the basics of telling time in German. Telling basic time is simple.
8.15 = Acht Uhr fünfzehn
7.20 = Sieben Uhr zwanzig
Simply read the numbers across from left to right with an UHR in the middle (where the period or colon is)
Neun Uhr vierzig = 9.40 (Germans tend to use a period instead of a colon to separate hours from minutes when writing the time in numerical form)
Also, all OFFICIAL times in German (train schedules, class schedules, TV schedules, etc.) are given using 24-Hour notation.
18.00 = 6:00 p.m.
21.00 = 9:00 p.m.
To figure out times that are greater than 12 hours, simply subtract 12, and you’ll get the answer. Conversely, to report the time after noon using 24-Hour notation, simply add 12 to the number. 1+12 = 13.00 = 1:00 p.m.
Ganz leicht, oder?
